“Because life is too short to live without poetry”

  • I'd like to take this opportunity to thank anybody who has read this site for at least a second over the past year, and to welcome aboard our newest scribe Keith. Hopefully in 2010 we can really push on with the site and provide more frequent content, I know it's been pretty hectic over the last few months. Expect 2009 film and music reviews up in the coming week. Now I'm off to finally catch Where The Wild Things Are. #
  • Seriously, where the hell does the time go? I have just realized, rather ashamedly, that I haven't submitted anything to this glorious little site in nearly two months. Two months! I'm appalled at myself. Scott's latest Hooray For Me comic pretty much sums up why I haven't been around much of late, though at least work hasn't been getting me down like it appears to have done to my compadre, more in that the sheer volume of it lately has left me wanting to do little more than either get drunk in a myriad of places or sit at home and play videogames. We hit a deadline tomorrow, though, so I expect things to quieten down significantly, thus giving me time to actually write some stuff! I should have a butt-load of things to write about, though, what with the amount of awesome games that have been released in the last few months, and all the crazy books I've been shoving into my brain (not literally, of course). I should also mention that, given that both myself and Scott are running this in our spare time alongside work, it's pretty tough to actually keep the site as fresh as we'd like. As a result, we may have a third writer join us rather soon. Once the old chap has come back from swanning around America, I daresay you can expect to be seeing a third name added to the site. Can't wait to see what kind of stuff he'll contribute! #
  • Just a very quick heads up to make mention that my US copy of King of Fighters XII arrived yesterday. There should be a review in the next few days. I'll be honest in that I was almost tempted to put up a review almost straight away after I initially felt incredibly disappointed with it, but after a decent online session with a friend last night (lag permitting - seriously the servers or netcode or whatever is the problem needs some major work) the game revealed some of its charms, both old and new. But, at any rate, at least my copy actually arrived unlike my 'eaten by the aether' BlazBlue that still hasn't arrived after a month of it being dispatched. #
  • So I finally got chance to spend a day at the cinema today, taking in the harmless Ice Age 3 and Mann's Public Enemies. Would you be shocked if I told you Ice Age was the superior of the two? Not as shocked as I was for sure. Public Enemies had everything - the true story, the cast, the director, the technology and squandered it on poor characters and lifeless performances. A write-up is forthcoming! #
  • This morning, when going through my customary routine checks over the sites I  frequent, I was both astounded and delighted to see that Jeffrey Ford, one of my favourite writer's and an an absolutely splendid fellow, had posted an entry on his blog containing some very warm words in regard our little site here. I owe a lot to Jeff already - he was an enormous help to me back in the days of PH-UK. He would give me regular support in helping contact authors that I was interested in interviewing, and would never seem to tire of my amatuerish ways of going about it. I would get regular emails offering further support, or merely remarking that he had enjoyed a particular article. I always counted myself extremely fortunate to have had such an esteemed benefactor helping me behind the scenes, as it were, and it looks as though that his generosity hasn't diminished a single iota. I hadn't spoken to Ford for maybe a couple of years, and, merely wishing to know that he was well, I sent him a mail expressing as much, to which I received a prompt reply that also contained an offer that blew me away. I quote from the reply: "Drop me your address, and I'll send you a paperback of The Shadow Year and The Drowned Life". To the uninformed, these two books were two publication's of Ford's that I had unfortunately missed, partly due to me being out of the loop, and partly down to me having something of a falling out with my books after the horrendous closing months of working in the book shop. Ford astounded me with such an out of the blue gesture, and as a byproduct is partially responsible for my rekindled interest in writing on the internet. Jeffrey Ford, my hat (if I wore one) goes off to you! #
